New Pathways for Responsible Gambling In the past 20 years, the responsible and problem gambling field has progressed tremendously in the science and interventions regarding online gambling. Initially, it was known as an unregulated market where people could fall prey to games and promises on servers sitting in a warehouse in the Caribbean, without a hint of responsible gambling. Then, in 2011, it quickly became a race to build the legal U.S. online gambling space, but with minimum standards based off nascent research. Responsible gambling advocates and service providers worried that players would be recluse, uninhibited, and anonymous in their play behavior and gaming approach. Fast forward to 2021. Roughly a quarter of North American lotteries offer many types of online products and do so with some of the most advanced responsible gambling tools available in the world, minimizing many of the harms that most worried the public and problem gambling professionals ten years prior. Lotteries engage in processes that allow their players to not only have the best levels of KYC (know your customer) for security purposes, but also to customize interventions and education to what players most need. They can specify players’ normative behavior and demonstrate how an individual’s dashboard compares to the averages of others. Limit setting can happen for wins and losses, and players can pre-commit to time spent on the entire site or specific games. With technological advances, online lottery products can be customized to the type and speed of play that is most advantageous to the player’s goals.  There are endless iterations and possibilities about adapting platforms and games to a safer and healthier customer-centric experience. Although many lotteries have ventured into virtual product portfolios, some have done more than others to expertly hone their approach to responsible gambling while going online. Two such lotteries are those in Michigan and Kentucky, and to inform this article, they have shared their experiences going online, what works (and what does not), and what they hope to implement in the future to improve their responsible gambling efforts. According to Blaine DeGracia, Responsible Gaming manager for the Michigan Bureau of State Lottery, and Chip Polston, Senior Vice President of Communications, Public Relations, and Social Responsibility for the Kentucky Lottery, the number one most important action to which both attribute their initial responsible gambling success online, was undergoing the iCAP verification program with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) under the leadership of Keith Whyte, NCPG’s Executive Director. Polston offered, “This was an absolute game changer – the iCAP program very clearly laid out what the elements of a highly responsible platform would look like, and basically gave us the road map to use moving forward.” Added Kentucky Lottery President and Chief Executive Officer Mary Harville, “We’re proud of our continued certification through the iCap program, and what that means for the safeguards we have in place with our iLottery program. Our work with the NCPG has been beneficial to help us learn online best practices and has helped make our initiatives better and more effective.” The iCAP, or Internet Compliance Assessment Program, uses the latest scientific literature to inform responsible gambling guidelines used to verify the compliance of a Lottery’s internet gambling site with the NCPG Internet Responsible Gambling (IRG) Standards. IRG Standards include a framework to guide lotteries to success in the following areas: Policy to instruct and support teams in the implementation of lottery-wide responsible gambling programs and practices that instill confidence with customers, employees, and regulators Staff Training and professional development models that detail how to engage employees in knowledge and skill set advancement to best help customers in need Informed Decision platforms that offer options to players to gather personal play-based data that allows them to customize limit-setting and messaging Player Assistance mechanisms, protocols, and resources built into customer service and other public-facing staff responsibilities Self-Exclusion programs that detail the responsibility of the operator, regulator, and the employee in this helping intervention Advertising and Promotion guidelines that provide the guardrails for what is and is not appropriate and how it should be applied based on the prevalence of problems in priority populations Game and Site Features that remain based in adult-focused, chance-based games that are designed to be fun and entertaining Research agendas that support innovation in the field using anonymized data, suggests change from evaluation, and utilizes evidence-based research to determine games and mechanics Payments accepted in a controlled and cash-based model with personal data protected While incredibly useful for any lottery going online, the iCAP verification process is not for the faint of heart. The program requires assembling and creating detailed descriptions of policies, procedures, and user interfaces, with reference to each of the IRG standards, conducted by Sarah Ramanauskas, an independent specialist testing partner with Gambling Integrity, based in the UK. Although he described it as “tough,” DeGracia couldn’t say enough about the assistance of Ramanauskas: “Sarah, as an auditor, was an enormous help. She was on onsite and with us every step of the way in our effort to best protect the player.” And Polston stressed the benefit of access to outside expertise, “Through our three assessments, we’ve found it helpful to have a different set of trained and professional eyes review what you’re doing from the outside to make sure your program is effective as it can be and needs to be.” Four lotteries currently have achieved iCAP certification – Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The certification typically takes four to five weeks and costs $10,500 for NCPG Members ($12,000 for non-members) with a rolling deadline. Although a lottery can potentially not “pass” the certification, they are able to reapply with an “improvement plan.” Ramanauskas works with each entity to tweak and change some of their offerings to best meet the standards. As they encourage more online lottery and sportsbooks to go through iCAP verification process, Whyte states, “We hope iCAP has created a default lottery basic minimum standard that is helpful for consumers, lotteries, and their vendors. There is no downside to a high standard that helps everyone and is consumer-centric.” Whyte and Ramanauskas assume the next step for iCAP is to consider mobile gaming verification. The most important aspect of any of the IRG standard programs, according to Collins, has been training.  He discussed NPi’s annual responsible gambling training that walks employees through scenarios and brings staff up to date on current research and interventions. He stressed how key it is that his staff is well trained to confidently speak to players about deposit limits, voluntary self-exclusion, odds and game rules. They want to help not only customers but also educate them. NPI trains employees on the gambling content but also spends time helping them to develop skills to assess the most effective ways to make a trusted connection – there are specific ways to gain trust and build rapport on a chat line vs. an email exchange. Both are important to balance for tone, empathy, and succinct information dissemination. NPi’s approach to making sure that employees use care and evidence to help to correct players’ erroneous beliefs was recently confirmed by researchers at University of British Columbia, who found that individuals with gambling problems are more likely to use incorrect or irrelevant information to guide their gambling and more likely to benefit from an online lottery algorithm that can identify their play as problematic (Limbrick-Oldfield et al). Michigan has also found research to be paramount to striking the appropriate balance in product development and marketing, informing program changes in their self-exclusion program, and pathways to information on their website. DeGracia outlined their commitment to learning from their customers through focus groups and player surveys and collecting data used to alter future lottery products. And it appears Michigan is on the right track. The necessity of play-based behavior tracking and research was highlighted in a French study done by Challet-Bouju et al in 2020, where researchers found that there are five different types of play based on behaviors tracked on an online lottery site, and each type of play required different types of interventions to improve the health of the player. DeGracia, Polston, and Collins all agreed that more personalization and the ability to make informed choices is where they most hope to see an increase in the future. DeGracia stated, “In 2019 we were able to bring the native clock from their online device forward to be seen during the game. From here, we’d love to have more industry standards and language to help players track their play.” Polston discussed Kentucky’s need for more useful resources and interaction with self-excluded players who come back to the site after their term has expired. “We’re currently working on messaging we’ll send them after their account is reactivated. This is the type of insight we get by going through an [iCAP] assessment which helps us create a wish list of what we can do to make our operation even better.” In terms of what Whyte and Ramanauskas see for iCAP on the horizon? They hope that iCAP has evolved to include broader public health engagement with behavioral tracking and messaging, more mystery shopping and customer engagement, and a broader acceptance of the need for third-party evaluators and verification. It is worth noting that although many lotteries are using the pandemic and the explosion of sports wagering to rush to online sales, DeGracia, Polston, and Collins all agreed that leadership and planning is essential to make responsible gambling work. They all reiterated that a top-down approach to the standards, the iCAP program, and communicating that commitment is what allowed them each the space to create and promote effective, responsible gambling programs. Ten years ago, no one could have imagined the innovation possible in online gambling and online responsible gambling tools. With evidence-based standards and cooperative approaches between lotteries, regulators, service providers, researchers, and advocates, it is clear that the future holds much in the way of customized player tools and data informed messaging that will build a solid foundation to keep gambling as it was intended, as fun and entertainment. By Marlene Warner, Executive Director, Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health WHO Renews its Pro-Gaming Campaign Despite New Research Indicating Increase in Risky Play At the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, The World Health Organization (WHO) launched an international campaign called #PlayApartTogether. The WHO joined with 18 of the world’s biggest game industry leaders promoting video gameplay as a way to safely combat social isolation during the COVID-19 crisis. After contention following the 2019 WHO decision to designate video game addiction as an official mental health disorder, this new partnership marked a shift in the relationship between the gaming industry and the WHO. Chris DeWolfe, Co-founder, and CEO of Jam City announced his company’s involvement in the partnership. “Jam City knows that many are turning to games for stress relief and a little joy during these perilous times. As a game company with tens of millions of players, we call on everyone to #PlayApartTogether to flatten the curve and put an end to COVID-19.” While research has shown that “moderate” gaming can provide a mental boost – moderate means less that one hour a day for kids and 2 hours a day for adults. The question of whether on-line gaming meets the emotional need for human connection has been discussed by researchers and clinicians in recent years. Despite the promise of #PlayApartTogether, online gaming does not provide the markers of interconnectedness needed for humans to flourish. Imagine a malnourished person with a bottomless bag of Skittles. The candy and the gaming provide, at best, an extremely short-term fix for a human in crisis. (Quote from expert here) But if extended gameplay is the yard stick, #PlayApartTogether has been a success. The State of Online Gaming – a 2021 survey of 4,000 people 18 years and older in eight countries – asked how gaming habits had changed in the past year since the pandemic began. According to the study, gaming has increased over the course of the pandemic. There was a 14% increase in gaming time per week gaming with the average time being 8 hours and 27 minutes of play. 25% of these players report gaming more than 12 hours per week. Of more concern is the 13% increase in “binge gaming” reports where players game for 5 or more hours in one sitting. About a third of respondents said they miss showering, eating, and socializing to play – all of which are signs of at-risk play. Nearly half of respondents reported gaming during work hours. Despite this concerning data, on April 13th, 2021 The World Health Organization, now joined by an additional 70 gaming companies, announced the renewal of the #PlayApartTogether campaign. With no guidelines for parents or adult players on safe play, or how to get help if gaming becomes problematic, #PlayApartTogether feels more like an industry-led initiative than a public health campaign. What remains clear is the need to offer treatment for roughly 3% of video game players who will experience addiction.  The Mass Council is committed to training clinical providers on assessment and treatment for both Gaming and Gambling Disorder. Perhaps you have a question about the odds of roulette, are curious about how the house edge works with slot machines – or maybe you’re looking for assistance in taking a break from gambling and want to learn more about the Voluntary Self-Exclusion program (VSE). GSAs and MACGH staff are trained to answer these questions and more! We’re excited about this new tool and we’re optimistic it will prove to be increasingly helpful in the future – especially with gambling activities increasingly moving online. During the first six weeks of LiveChat, GSAs and MACGH staff fielded around 150 chats. The conversations ranged from addressing questions from clinicians about upcoming trainings, players who had questions about the rules of a casino game, and individuals seeking information about (VSEs). In fact, during this time, GameSense conducted four VSEs for individuals generated from LiveChat! Subject Matter of Interest for Chatters Over the first 6 Week Period:         VSEs allow participants to voluntarily exclude themselves from the gaming floor of all Massachusetts casinos for a pre-determined length of time. It can be an effective tool for individuals looking to take a break from gambling at the MA casinos. In addition, remote VSE enrollment can now be utilized by anyone who is unable or uncomfortable enrolling in person! Although LiveChat allows GSAs and MACGH to converse remotely, 24/hrs a day, via chat on a smartphone device or computer, GSAs can also be found at all three Massachusetts casinos on the gaming floor or the GameSense Information Centers located inside the casinos. And on the casino floor is where the GSAs do most of their work. As excited as we are about the introduction of LiveChat, the bulk of a GSAs activity is engaging with individuals face-to-face. In fact, in March alone, the GSAs had over 8,000 responsible gaming conversations with casino guests and employees as part of Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). While we welcome the new technology, we want to meet the needs of those who still want to pick up the phone, and that’s why we have a 24/hr phone line as well where you can talk with a GSA about your gambling-related questions. The Safer Gaming Education Line number is 1-800-426-1234. LiveChat can be accessed by visiting www.macgh.org or www.gamesensema.com, and we look forward to hearing from you. By: Chelsea Turner Kopel’s Corner: Review of Gambling Harms in Massachusetts Review of Gambling Harms in Massachusetts: Evidence from the BGPS and BOPS What is gambling harm, how is it defined, and how is it measured?  This report looks at the multiple approaches to this concept and how this information can inform programming. Over the past 25 years or so, researchers have identified and categorized seven harms associated with problem gambling: financial, health, mental health, family or relationship issues, work/school problems, participation in illegal activities, and multiple harms. Identifying gambling harms was typically a clinical assessment of a person who suffered from a gambling disorder.  More recently, there has been a shift to a more public health perspective to not only consider the problem gambler, but also those immediately affected by the problem gambler, and the effects on the community as a whole. In this report, the UMass SEIGMA team incorporated their Problem and Pathological gambling measure (PPGM) into their Baseline General Population Survey (BGPS) and Baseline Online Panel Survey (BOPS), to develop an integrated dataset of regular gamblers.  With this information, they analyzed the likelihood of regular gamblers from varying demographic groups to endorse the differing gambling harms. AGE – Younger regular gamblers (18-30) were the age category more likely to experience financial harms, health harms, mental health harms, family issues, and commit illegal acts than all older age groups.  This younger group were also much more likely to endorse multiple harms than those who are older. With respect to trends, regular gamblers are less likely to experience harms as they age. GENDER – Male regular gamblers were significantly more likely to experience financial harms, health harms, and one or more gambling harms compared to females. RACE/ETHNICITY – White regular gamblers endorsed significantly fewer harms related to gambling than the other demographic groups.  Latinos and Blacks reported significantly more health-related harms, mental health harms, and family/relationship harms compared to Whites. HOUSEHOLDS WITH CHILDREN – Regular gamblers, if they live in households with children, they are more likely to endorse all of the harms discussed (1 or more harms, Financial, Health, Depression/suicide, Family/relationship, Work/school and Illegal acts), compared with regular gamblers with no children in their household. Understanding the demographic implications that correlate with these higher rates of problem gambling harms, support the need for professionals and counselors to improve their screening of problem gamblers.  Further, this information is useful to raise awareness and promote services related to these harms among those negatively affected by a problem gambler and the community. A PDF OF THIS REPORT CAN BE DOWNLOADED AT: www.umass.edu/seigma Top of Page Racial Justice and Health Equity Committee Effective public health work requires addressing the social determinants of health that lead individuals to struggle with gambling, gaming and other addictions. These social determinants include, but are not limited to: racial injustice, poverty, insecure immigration status, homophobia and unequal educational opportunities.  Because MACGH is an agency focused on public health and welfare, it is incumbent upon us to acknowledge and address these social determinants and work towards eradicating all factors that contribute to a disproportionate prevalence gambling disorder in certain communities.  In 2019 we began work that would lead to the creation of the Racial Justice and Health Equity Committee (RJHEC). This Committee includes staff from all levels of the organization and meets regularly to address actionable items for Racial Justice and Health equity in the following three areas: Systemic/Societal/Institutional, Organizational Culture and Individual/interconnectedness.  Our first priority was to build a shared language to discuss issues of racial justice and health equity across the organization. To that end we hold bi-monthly trainings for all staff and share resources on a monthly basis.  We also review all communication, training and programming to ensure that our work in every department reflects our understanding of racial justice and health equity as the key to creating healthy communities. By Fall of 2021, we plan to have an evaluation mechanism to measure the impact of the RJHEC efforts and to develop new initiatives that reflect these priorities.  We will also provide helpful information, articles and personal stories in our newsletters to come.  Stay Tuned!

Daniil Medvedev Finds Another Way of Playing Professional Tennis
By admin | | 0 Comments |

At 23, Rublev is two years younger than Medvedev and grew up playing junior tournaments against him in Russia. For a long time Rublev, seeded No. 8, and Karen Khachanov, 24, the third member of Russia’s latest golden generation, were better than Medvedev. The rise for Medvedev came in 2018 and 2019, when he nearly beat Rafael Nadal in the 2019 United States Open final.“He reads the game really well,” Rublev said of Medvedev. “It’s amazing, the patience he has to stay so long in the rallies, to not rush, to take the time, because in the end these little details, they make him who he is.”Russia is the only country with two players in the top 10. Khachanov gives it three in the top 20. Aslan Karatsev, 27, another Russian ranked No. 114, came out of nowhere to make the quarterfinals here in his first Grand Slam tournament.Medvedev comes into the quarterfinal on perhaps the best roll of his career. He has won 18 consecutive singles matches. He won the ATP Tour finals in London in November, pulling off the nifty trick of beating the world’s top three players — Novak Djokovic, Nadal and Dominic Thiem — in a single tournament. For Russia at the ATP Cup, he beat Alexander Zverev of Germany, a 2020 U.S. Open finalist, in a tight, three-set match in the semifinal round.Medvedev spent his early childhood in Moscow and played few sports other than tennis growing up. He worshiped Russia’s last golden generation, which included Marat Safin and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who were in their prime when he was a young child. He moved to France to train as a teenager and became fluent in English and French.Medvedev could be heard screaming at his coach, Gilles Cervara of France, in French during his third-round match against Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, as he frittered away a two-set lead before recovering to win the final set, 6-0.

Texans’ rationale for not pulling off a J.J. Watt trade makes no sense
By admin | | 0 Comments |

It was widely presumed toward the end of their disastrous 2020 season that the Houston Texans would look to pull off a J.J. Watt trade. The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year has regressed in recent seasons. Houston is headed for a full-scale rebuild, especially if the Texans are forced to trade Deshaun Watson. That’s why it was a surprise last week when Houston outright released the future first ballot Hall of Famer rather than pull off a trade and acquire needed draft assets. Embattled owner Cal McNair attempted to explain the Texans’ decision. To say that it is the latest example of this organization falling flat on its face would be an understatement.Texans owner attempts to explain not pulling off a Watt trade “There are several reasons (for not trading J.J. Watt. But suffice it to say, we evaluated those, and we’re confident that this is the right one for J.J. and for us,” McNair said, via MMQB’s Albert Breer. “And it’s one we mutually came to and agreed on. And we felt that it was really the right one for J.J. Not every decision is easy or easy to understand. But we always want to do right by our players and our fans. And we want to focus on bringing a championship to Houston.” On one hand, giving Watt the pick of his litter when it comes to a new NFL city did paint the Texans in a good light after the drama we’ve seen from the organization and former players. On the other hand (and this is is the point of the article), Houston could have still traded Watt to a team of his choosing while recouping draft-pick assets. Following the 2012 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers let Alex Smith give them a list a few teams to which he would like to be traded after Colin Kaepernick won the starting job. In the end, Smith was dealt to his preferred destination -- Kansas City -- for two second-round picks. Doing right by a franchise player and attempting to build up a weak roster are not mutually exclusive. McNair and The Texans failed big-time in this regard. There was interest in a Watt trade A number of teams were interested in a Watt trade. Heck, McNair went on record recently indicating that Houston had taken some calls. For good reason. Despite some injury issues, the future Hall of Famer is just two years removed from recording 25 quarterback hits, 18 tackles for loss, 16 sacks and a resounding seven forced fumbles. He’d have been of interest to several contending teams. Instead, a Houston Texans team that is reeling after Deshaun Watson’s trade request and doesn’t boast a pick in the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft opted to give Watt up for nothing. In the process, he could even sign with a division rival. This is yet another example of the Texans’ organization failing its fan base on a near never-ending loop. It’s pretty gross.

Meet America’s 63rd National Park
By admin | | 0 Comments |

As Americans continue to weather the pandemic, the $2.3 trillion coronavirus relief and spending bill passed by the federal government in December brought an unexpected and lasting gift: a new national park. The 5,593-page spending package included a raft of provisions authorizing little-known projects — the construction of the Teddy Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, for one — and giving lawmakers a chance to advance a variety of long-delayed initiatives. Among them was the elevation of the New River Gorge, in southern West Virginia, to the status of Yellowstone, Yosemite and the country’s other most renowned outdoor spaces. The designation of the area — roughly 72,000 acres of land flanking 53 miles of the gorge — as a national park and preserve creates the 63rd national park in the United States and completes a multigenerational effort, started in the mid-twentieth century, to transform a tired industrial area into a national landmark.“Towards the end of this year, with these big bills coming down, I decided to strike,” said Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican and the state’s junior senator, who, along with Senator Joe Manchin III, a Democrat, introduced the New River Gorge legislation in 2019.“This was the right opportunity,” she said.A draw for rafters, kayakers and other outdoor enthusiastsThe gorge and its surroundings have been prized for decades as one of southern West Virginia’s more spectacular natural places. In 1963, the West Virginia House of Delegates passed a resolution seeking to designate the New River Gorge as a “national playground,” preparing to send the proposal to President John F. Kennedy, whose primary campaign was lifted substantially through support from West Virginia voters. But momentum to create a national recreation area stalled after Mr. Kennedy’s assassination later that year.Though the gorge remained a curiosity among rafters and outdoor enthusiasts, the area only received federal protection from the Interior Department in 1978, when it was designated a national river. Now, the outdoor offerings in the gorge have come to define the area as a premier destination for adventure sports in the East. The New River plunges 750 feet over 66 miles, resulting in long stretches of violent rapids that can reach a class five level, generally considered the most difficult that can be navigated by white-water boaters. (Licensed outfitters operate in several towns near the river, providing rentals and tours for rafting and kayaking.)The canyon walls, which soar as high as 1,600 feet, offer miles of cliffs that rank among the best in the East Coast for rock climbing. Sheer faces in the gorge made of robust Nuttall sandstone provide both traditional and sport-climbing routes across the difficulty spectrum.Bike routes are scattered throughout the park on both sides of the river, with options for both technical mountain biking and more casual pedaling along former railroad beds.A glimpse back in timeAccording to the National Park Service, geologists believe the New River — its name a misnomer used by early American explorers who often assigned the same name to any river they came upon for the first time — was a segment of the preglacial Teays River. This larger river, which traversed much of the current Ohio River watershed, was later diverted and broken up by glaciers. The age of the Teays is uncertain, but fossil evidence suggests it could be as much as 320 million years old, leaving its remnant, the New River, as quite possibly the second oldest river in the world.Beyond the millions of years of geological history on display, the gorge is also filled with signs of the region’s heritage as a major coal production hub.Miners once capitalized on the easy access to rich deposits of high-quality bituminous coal in the canyon, where the river had already shorn through hundreds of feet of rock. Especially after the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway linked the New River coal fields to markets in 1873, dozens of boom towns popped up along the river’s edge, thriving well into the 1920s.In 1963, a coal mine was still operating in the gorge, said Dave Arnold, a state tourism commissioner who operated a rafting company for more than 40 years.“In ’76 or ’77, if you were in my boat, we’d have been floating down the river and I would have been showing you, ‘here’s an old coal tipple, here’s the old hotel at Caperton, here’s this and that,’” he said. The demand for coal around the turn of the twentieth century was so high that towns existed every half mile along up the river, according to the Park Service. As the industry went into decline, however, by the 1950s many were already abandoned, leaving ghost towns scattered throughout the gorge. Additionally, logging during the late nineteenth century stripped vast portions of the gorge bare, clearing enormous swaths of virgin forest. The park contains the remnants of communities such as Nuttallburg and Kaymoor, which still stand near the riverbank and are accessible from points higher up. Seams of exposed coal are visible along some trails leading into the gorge and its towns, where abandoned mine portals and the foundations of coke ovens remain.Restoring an ecosystem with diverse wildlifeDespite the environmental degradation and pollution that industry unleashed, some unique ecological features make the gorge well-suited to a diverse combination of wildlife, which has slowly reappeared as time has passed. The river lies at the center of a migration corridor where plants and animals that typically range further north or south come together, including several federally endangered and threatened species, such as the Virginia big-eared bat and the Allegheny woodrat.According to Lizzie Watts, the park’s superintendent, the river itself is also notably warmer than surrounding areas, making it a popular warm-water fishing destination with more than a dozen public access points. The river is one of the premier spots for smallmouth bass fishing on the east coast, and muskellunge and walleye are common in the park today.“The next generation will have the opportunity to see what, in the last 150 years, it looks like when an area goes from being logged and mined to left alone,” Ms. Watts said. “The ecosystem has come back to full trees and mature forests.”As federal protections took effect after the Park Service began overseeing the area as a national river in 1978, wildlife has largely recovered, and many see an opportunity to showcase the region’s natural elegance.“To show off our rock climbing, our extreme sports availabilities in that area, is just really exciting,” said Ms. Capito of what she described as a “kind of wild and wonderful part of our state.” ‘The cream of the crop’The National Park Service, created in 1916, oversees more than 400 areas across the country, including national monuments, seashores and battlefields as well as parks, which together total more than 85 million acres. While the new title for New River Gorge does not fundamentally alter the area’s day-to-day operations, both lawmakers and the Park Service tend to view “national parks” as the crown jewels of the park system — a protection granted to some of the largest and most prized tracts of the country.“National Park status is usually considered like the cream of the crop,” Ms. Watts said. “But it really is just another one of those names.”The New River Gorge does not match the scale of many national parks in the western United States, where Death Valley, the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone sprawl over more than 1 million acres each.Nevertheless, officials expect the new designation to bring a substantial influx of travelers, boosted in part by a dedicated set of enthusiasts who strive to visit every national park.In typical years, around 1.3 million travelers visit the gorge, according to the Park Service’s tourism data. Based on studies of other areas that received national park status, Ms. Capito said she expects to see visitors increase by as much as 20 percent.“It does feel like the very beginning stages of transformation for the whole area,” said Becky Sullivan, the executive director of the New River Gorge Convention and Visitors Bureau. “I’ll be very, very interested to see where we are in about 10 years.”Maintaining the community and its favored pastimesAs unique outdoor attractions throughout the Appalachian region have gained more national visibility, some concern has grown over the idea of a wealthy and mobile set from out of state trampling the communities adjacent to these places.West Virginia remains the second-poorest state in the country in terms of median household income, according to data collected by the United States Census Bureau. And while tourism has brought a needed injection of wealth to areas all around the gorge, it has also changed the makeup of neighboring communities, as more people have come to visit the park or settle down near it.Interest in the natural offerings around the park has brought slow but measurable change for small towns nearby like Fayetteville. Officials say that the advent of remote work during the pandemic has only hastened a trend of properties in the area being repurposed for vacation rentals and outsiders snapping up second homes.“You cannot find a house for sale in Fayetteville, because they’re just in such high demand,” said Sharon Cruikshank, the town’s mayor. “So that definitely changed the budgeting of the town as well as the county.”When legislation was first introduced to designate the area as a national park, pushback came from some locals. Hunters have long enjoyed access to secluded sections of woods around the gorge, and with hunting prohibited in federal parks, some protested the potential loss of thousands of acres of hunting grounds. In a compromise, more than 65,000 acres of the total area were designated as a nature preserve where hunting can continue as before, and only roughly 7,000 acres directly within the canyon are officially off limits as national parkland. A provision was included to empower the park to acquire more than 3,000 acres of private land around its current boundaries as well, to expand the size of the preserve and add public hunting grounds. In a nod to tradition, the legislation also enshrines the right for visitors to continue to make use of one of the park’s most famous features — the New River Gorge Bridge — at least once a year.BASE jumping, an extreme sport in which jumpers parachute from elevated structures or cliffs, is banned in every other national park. But, since 1980, BASE jumpers have been permitted to plunge from the top of the 876-foot-high bridge and parachute down toward the river once a year, on Bridge Day, held one Saturday in October. The legislation designating the area as a national park allows that tradition to continue. As many as 100,000 people typically come to watch the jumpers plunge, according to Ms. Sullivan, providing a major boost for businesses in the region. The event has only been canceled twice, including last year because of the coronavirus.Bridge Day’s organizers advise jumpers that the only dependable way to touch down safely is to plan to land directly in the river. In normal years, hundreds do so, often multiple times that day, gliding down and softly hitting the New River’s waters.

Root: Pitch not to blame for England defeat

England captain Joe Root says team "outplayed" by India on tough surface as they lose second Test by 317 runs; skipper feels his men can learn from the way the hosts found control with the ball and batted calmly; third Test in Ahmedabad from February 24 Last Updated: 16/02/21 10:01am 0:56 England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India. England captain Joe Root says his squad must not get too down about their heavy defeat in the second Test against India. Joe Root refused to blame the spin-friendly Chennai pitch for England's thumping defeat to India in the second Test - and has urged his side to learn from the difficult conditions they faced. England were spun out for 134 and 164 at MA Chidambaram Stadium on a dusty surface as India wrapped up a 317-run victory on day four to level the four-match series at 1-1.Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin completed hundreds for India and Root says the hosts showed England a template for scoring runs on unhelpful tracks for batsmen. Root says his side must learn from the challenging conditions they faced in Chennai (Pic credit - BCCI) "I wouldn't say it was a good pitch but it made for very exciting cricket and it was not the reason we lost the game. We were outplayed in all three departments," said the England skipper."For us, it's a bit of an education. It was a surface that spun a huge amount and bounced more than we anticipated but we should take that as a learning and be better for it the next time we experience conditions that are similar."The toss was an important one to win - but it wouldn't have guaranteed us a win either. India showed you can score runs and found a way of managing a very tricky surface."Our batters need to learn from how India rotated strike, while what I took from how they played was how calm and unflustered they were. When a delivery really misbehaved, they didn't waver from their game-plan." Ravichandran Ashwin (pictured) and Rohit Sharma scored centuries for India in the second Test (Pic credit - BCCI) Root - whose side will be looking to bounce back in the day-night third Test in Ahmedabad from February 24 with their six-match winning streak in overseas Tests having been snapped - also felt his bowlers could have been more frugal on day one when India reached 300-6 after electing to bat."We have to find ways of building pressure for long periods of time with the ball, bowling six balls at one batter, which India made very difficult for us."Can we string maidens together and force wickets through very disciplined passages of play? I think India did that better than us."On day one we could probably have been a bit tighter and squeezed the game, making it hard for them to score freely. The four-match Test series is tied at 1-1 heading into the third Test, a day-night fixture in Ahmedabad from February 24 "We have to learn from the opposition, who played very well, but we are 1-1 in the series and there are two very important games to come."We are very excited about that because of how well we played in the first game. We are very much in this series. It's set up very nicely."We have to stay level. We don't get above our station when we win and it's not all doom and gloom when we have tough weeks."It is very important we stay level as a team. We have to learn but that is one thing we have done well in recent times so hopefully we can take that into the rest of the series." 0:52 Root says he understands Moeen Ali's decision to leave England's bio-secure bubble and return home to his family Root says he understands Moeen Ali's decision to leave England's bio-secure bubble and return home to his family Root - who also confirmed that all-rounder Moeen Ali will miss the rest of the series having opted to fly home - said Ben Stokes only bowled two overs in the game for tactical reasons, not due to injury."Ben is fit and able to bowl but, on that surface, you look at the overs of seam bowled and it was minimal," said Root."I'm sure Ben will have an impact on this series with the ball as he did in the first game. He can grab big moments and turn them on their head."Pressed on whether he wanted to include the rested James Anderson, who had starred with a scintillating spell of reverse-swing bowling on day five of the first Test, Root added: "It was discussed. "But we need to look at the series as a whole. The pink-ball game looks an exciting opportunity for someone like him to have a real impact."Follow text commentary of the day-night third Test between India and England in Ahmedabad on skysports.com and the Sky Sports app from 8.30am on Wednesday, February 24. .
